Mount Everest, 8848.86 meters above sea level, is the highest peak in the world. Located on the border of Tibet and Nepal, Mount Everest is the main peak of the Himalayas. Names of Mount Everest
Tibetan people call Mount Everest Qomolangma, which means "Mother of the Earth". In Tibetan, Qo-mo means a goddess, and lang-ma means a mother elephant (in Tibetan, lang-ma has two meanings: high mountain willow and mother elephant). In Nepalese, it's called Sagarmatha, which means "Goddess of the Sky". This name was named by the Nepalese government in the 1960s because the Nepalese people did not name this mountain before, and the government did not choose to use the transliteration name for political reasons.
Its English name "Everest" comes from a British George Everest, who was the head of the Bureau of Survey of India and responsible for surveying the Himalayas in the mid-19th century. In 1852, the height of Mount Everest was first measured to be 29002 feet (equivalent to 8839.8 meters), and it was discovered as the highest peak in the world by the British surveyor George Everest. Before that, Kangchenjunga on the east of Mt.Everest was regarded as the highest peak in the world. In 1865, this mountain was officially named Everest.
Since it was discovered as the highest mountain in 1852, there are constantly adventurous travelers coming to climb Mount Everest. It was not until 1953 that two climbers successfully climbed to the top of Mount Everest. Every year, more climbers want to challenge the summit of Mount Everest. By February 2020, a total of 4,469 people have successfully climbed 7,646 times.

Mount Everest is situated at the junction of the Eurasian continent and the South Asian subcontinent, which is the largest plateau in China and the highest in the world. It is on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, known as the "Roof of the World" and the "Third Pole". It is located on the border between Tibet and Nepal. The middle section of the Himalayas is located at 27°59′15.85″ north latitude and 86°55′39.51″ east longitude.

The northern part of Mount Everest is in Tingri County of the Tibet Autonomous Region, and it is also the center of the Mount Everest Nature Reserve. The Nature Reserve is divided into three functional areas: core area, buffer zone and experimental area. Among them, the area where Mount Everest is situated on the southern edge is called the "Everest Core Area", with an area of about 3,000 square kilometers.
