Frequently Asked Questions

How to get to Tibet from the UK?

There are two main routes to Tibet from the UK: via China or Nepal.

Via China: You can fly from London Heathrow to major Chinese cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an, Guangzhou, or Chengdu. We recommend nonstop flights from London to Beijing or Shanghai, which take about 10–12 hours. From there, you can either fly (3–4 hours) or take the train to Lhasa (22–48 hours, depending on the route).

Via Nepal: You can fly from London to Kathmandu with transfers in cities such as Delhi, Muscat, or Abu Dhabi. The journey usually takes 19–35 hours. From Kathmandu, you may either take a direct flight to Lhasa or enjoy an adventurous overland journey from Kathmandu into Tibet.

What documents are required?

No matter whether you enter Tibet from China or Nepal, you must obtain a Tibet Travel Permit, which can only be arranged by a licensed local travel agency in Tibet. To apply for the permit, you will be required to provide a scanned copy of your valid passport and Chinese visa. If you enter Tibet from Kathmandu, you need to apply for a China Group Visa.

At present, UK citizens can enjoy a 30-day visa-free entry to China until December 31, 2026. So you don't have to apply for a China visa or a China group visa with a stay of 30 days.

When & where to get the Tibet Travel Permit?

Applying for a Tibet Travel Permit through the Tibet Tourism Bureau usually takes 10 to 30 working days, depending on your destination in Tibet.

  • Entering Tibet from China by plane: Your travel agency will courier the original permit to your hotel in mainland China. You must present the original permit during airport security checks before boarding your flight to Lhasa.
  • Entering Tibet from China by train: You also need to carry the original permit. It will be checked at the railway station before boarding.
  • Entering Tibet from Nepal by land: Your tour guide will bring the permit and meet you at the border.
  • Entering Tibet from Nepal by plane to Lhasa: Your tour guide will bring the permit and meet you at customs.

This way, no matter which entry method you choose, you can enter Tibet smoothly with your permit.

What is the best time to travel from the UK to Tibet?

Overall, the best time to travel to Tibet is from April to October, but the ideal season depends on the type of activities you are interested in:

  • Mount Everest tours: The best time is May, June, September, and early October, when the winds at Everest Base Camp (EBC) are relatively mild, the weather is clear, and visibility is high, offering a chance to view the summit from the base camp.
  • Western Tibet (e.g., Mount Kailash): The best time is from May to late September, when the climate is warm, rainfall is low, and conditions are ideal for sightseeing and photography.
  • Trekking: May and June mark late spring to early summer, with blooming flowers and greenery; September and early October are autumn, with clear skies and light winds, making these months ideal for trekking and photography.
  • Lhasa (the sacred city): Can be visited year-round.
