The Lhasa–Nyingchi Railway is a high-speed electrified railway connecting Lhasa and Nyingchi in the Tibet Autonomous Region. As an important section of the Sichuan–Tibet Railway, construction began on December 19, 2014, and the line officially opened on June 25, 2021. The railway has a total length of 435.48 kilometers, with a design speed of 160 km/h.

For travelers, the Lhasa to Nyingchi train has dramatically improved transportation in southeastern Tibet, shortening the journey time from about 8 hours to around 3 hours.

Route Overview

The Lhasa–Nyingchi Railway starts from Xierong Station, the junction of the Lhasa–Shigatse Railway and the Lhasa–Nyingchi Railway. From here, the line follows the Lhasa River, turns east via Gonggar, passes through Shannan, Lang County, and Milin County, and finally crosses the Yarlung Zangbo River to reach Nyingchi Station.

Located in southeastern Tibet, the railway runs between the Gangdise Mountains and the Himalayas on the Tibetan Plateau. The highest point along the route reaches about 3,700 meters, and more than 90% of the railway lies above 3,000 meters above sea level.
Along the way, the train crosses the Yarlung Zangbo River 16 times and travels through dramatic landscapes of high mountains and deep valleys, with relative elevation differences of up to 2,500 meters, highlighting the engineering challenge of building railways on the plateau.

The mainline length used for passenger services is approximately 403 kilometers.
