Gyantse county is subordinate to Shigatse of the Tibet Autonomous Region. It is located in the south of Tibet, the east of Shigatse and the upper reaches of Nyang Chu River. The average altitude of Gyantse is about 4,000 meters, with a total area of 3,771 square kilometers. It is one of the famous historical and cultural cities in China, as well as a new tourist town.

Gyantse means "top of the fortress of victory" in Tibetan. The city has the title of "hero city" in history. It is one of the few places that has little influence from modern society. Pelkor Chöde Monastery is one of the must-see attractions in Tibet. It is the only monastery where the three major sects of Tibetan Buddhism gather. Yamdrok Lake is a very representative attraction in Tibet. It is one of the great three holy lakes in Tibet with stunning scenery. Gyantse Dzong is another beautiful scenery of Gyantse tourism. Yamdrok Lake (羊卓雍措湖) is one of the three sacred lakes in Tibet and regarded as the most beautiful Tibetan lake. Yamdrok Lake is located on the south bank of the Yarlung Zangbo River, in Nagarzê County of Shannan. Yamdrok means "jasper lake" and "swan pond" in Tibetan.
