Frequently Asked Questions

How to travel from the USA to Tibet?

There are two main routes to reach Tibet from the USA:

One option is to fly to a major city in mainland China (such as Beijing, Chengdu, Shanghai, or Guangzhou) and then transfer by plane or train to Lhasa. The other option is to fly to Kathmandu, Nepal, and then continue to Lhasa by plane or overland via the Everest Base Camp.

No matter which route you choose, we can provide the best itinerary to ensure a worry-free journey.

The best time to visit Tibet is generally from April to October, when the weather is warmer and sunny. The ideal timing also depends on the specific destinations you plan to visit.

  • Mount Everest: The best months are April–May and September–October, when the climate is dry, visibility is high, and you can enjoy clear views of the peak.
  • Mount Kailash: The best time is from May to early October. Although July and August may bring some rainfall, it mostly occurs at night. During this period, the air is relatively humid and oxygen levels are higher, making it suitable for trekking. By late October, temperatures begin to drop and some areas may experience snowfall.

Additionally, Lhasa can be visited year-round. Even in winter, Lhasa enjoys abundant sunshine, and daytime temperatures usually reach around 15°C, making sightseeing still comfortable.

If you fly to Lhasa from a major city in mainland China, you must present your passport, Chinese visa, and Tibet Travel Permit. The original Travel Permit is usually sent in advance by your Tibet travel agency to your hotel in mainland China. If you travel to Lhasa by train, a printed copy of the Travel Permit is sufficient.

If you enter Tibet from Kathmandu, Nepal, you need to prepare your passport, Chinese group visa, and a copy of the Tibet Travel Permit.

It is recommended to apply for the Tibet Travel Permit at least 2 weeks in advance and carry a copy with you to ensure a smooth journey.

First, if you have underlying health conditions, be sure to consult your doctor for professional advice and carry prescribed medications. Travelers with severe colds, high fever, chronic lung diseases, or serious cardiovascular conditions should avoid high-altitude areas.

Preparation before departure:
- Avoid strenuous activities and intense work 1-2 weeks beforehand, and ensure adequate sleep.
- Traveling by train to Lhasa can help better adapt to the high altitude.

Upon arrival:
- Rest for 1-2 hours after reaching Lhasa.
- Avoid bathing, rapid walking, and strenuous activities during the first three days; keep activities low-intensity.
- Stay in Lhasa for 2-3 days to acclimate before continuing your trip.
- Prioritize staying in hotels equipped with dispersed oxygen supply, ensure good ventilation, and elevate pillows at night to improve breathing.
- If feeling unwell, use oxygen therapy—10-15 minutes each time—and avoid prolonged high-flow oxygen.
