Frequently Asked Questions

Can I cycle in Tibet?

Of course, you can. You are allowed to cycle in Tibet on the condition that you have got the Tibet Travel Permit, the private tour guide, and the vehicle. The guide and the driver will drive in the lead of the team, and you need to follow them.

Tibet Travel Permit is the primary permit for cyclists to get. Some extra permits like Aliens' Travel Permit and Military Permit are required in some remote Tibetan mountainous areas. We Great Tibet Tour can help you apply for those permits for free if you book our Tibet tour packages.

A bike is an essential tool during the cycling tour. At present, more and more travelers are willing to cycle from Lhasa city to Kathmandu. With the development of the Tibetan tourism industry, getting a mountain bike is much easier than in the past. Cyclists can buy or rent bikes in the starting point - Lhasa city. Then sell out your bikes in Kathmandu when finishing their cycling tour. The second way is to take your bikes by express delivery.

If you want to ride a motorbike, 1515 USD is required to pay to customs as the deposit; then, you need to get the international driver's license. For the renting fee, it's 230 USD per day.

It is inconvenient for cyclists to buy some necessities in the mountainous areas. You should pack plenty of food, drinks, water-proof tent, first-aid kit, sleeping bag, waterproof coat, waterproof shoes, wind-proof clothes, warm clothes, map, sunblock, lipstick, sunglasses, etc.

The best time to cycle in Tibet is in May, June, September, and October. July and August are the rainy seasons. Therefore, you’d better avoid the two months. Winter is not the right time because the roads might be blocked by the heavy snows.
