Shanghai Tower, located in the Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone of Pudong, is the tallest building in China and the second tallest in the world, rising 632 meters with 127 stories above ground and 5 below. Its unique form resembles a spiraling “guitar pick,” with each floor rotating nearly one degree as the building ascends. This elegant twisting design not only gives the tower its graceful appearance but also reduces wind pressure by 24%, a crucial feature for such a supertall skyscraper.
The tower features an innovative double façade structure, consisting of two layers of glass curtain walls that form overlapping “tubes.” The space between them, varying from 1 to 10 meters, serves as a public area and also acts like the insulating layer of a thermos, improving energy efficiency while enhancing comfort.
Inside, Shanghai Tower is a comprehensive mixed-use development, bringing together five main functions: retail and entertainment, low- to high-rise office space, conference facilities, a luxury hotel, and the top-level observation and experience areas.
For visitors, one of the highlights is the thrilling elevator ride to the 118th-floor observation deck. The high-speed lifts whisk passengers to over 500 meters above ground in just 55 seconds, a record-setting experience. From the top, the views of the Huangpu River, the Bund, and the dazzling skyline of Shanghai are breathtaking, especially at sunset or when the city lights up at night.
As an architectural and engineering marvel, Shanghai Tower is more than just a skyscraper—it is a symbol of Shanghai’s innovation, energy, and rising global stature, offering visitors a chance to experience the city from its highest point.
