Where is Sichuan - Sichuan on China Map
Sichuan Province is located in the southwest of China. It borders Chongqing Municipality to the east, Yunnan Province and Guizhou Province to the south, the Tibet Autonomous Region to the west, Qinghai Province and Gansu Province to the north, and Shaanxi Province to the northeast. Situated in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, Sichuan covers a total area of about 486,000 square kilometers, making it the fifth largest provincial-level administrative region in China.

Sichuan's tourism resources are characterized by distinct regional features, mainly divided into four core tourism areas. As attractions are relatively scattered across the province, it’s recommended to choose regional in-depth tours based on your preferences—for example, pairing Jiuzhaigou with Huanglong, or visiting Leshan and Emei together, or exploring themed routes like Dujiangyan–Qingcheng Mountain or the Western Sichuan Loop.

Chengdu and Surrounding Areas
This region is known for its historical and cultural sites as well as natural landscapes, including Dujiangyan, Qingcheng Mountain, Sanxingdui, Mount Emei, and the Leshan Giant Buddha. It offers a concentrated display of western Sichuan’s rich cultural heritage and natural wonders.
Aba Prefecture
Renowned for its highland landscapes and ethnic charm, Aba features world-class natural heritage sites such as Jiuzhaigou, Huanglong, Mount Siguniang, and Dagu Glacier, along with ecological attractions like the Wolong Giant Panda Reserve and Ruoergai Flower Lake.
Garzê (Ganzi) Prefecture
This area is celebrated for its unique Tibetan culture and dramatic natural beauty, including destinations like Daocheng Yading, Sertar Buddhist Institute, and Hailuogou Glacier Park, blending sacred lakes, snow-capped mountains, and spiritual Tibetan traditions.
Liangshan Prefecture
Centered around lakes and ethnic minority settlements, this region includes attractions such as Lugu Lake, Qionghai Lake in Xichang, and Huili Ancient Town, preserving unique folk customs like the Mosuo culture.
Plan a Sichuan Trip from Chengdu
Chengdu, the provincial capital, also the gateway to Sichuan, is a great place to start your journey. From the city center around Chunxi Road, you can easily visit popular spots like Wuhou Temple, Wenshu Monastery, Jinli Street, and the Giant Panda Base. After exploring Chengdu, set out to nearby sites such as Mount Emei, Leshan Giant Buddha, and Dujiangyan, or head farther to stunning destinations like Jiuzhaigou, Huanglong, and Daocheng Yading. Jiuzhaigou & Huanglong National Park: Famous for their colorful alpine lakes, lush forests, and dramatic waterfalls, these UNESCO World Heritage sites are must-see stops for nature lovers.
Mount Siguniang: A stunning mountain range often referred to as the "Eastern Alps," with towering peaks and clear rivers, perfect for trekking and photography.
Daocheng Yading: Known as the "last Shangri-La," this area offers a paradise of pristine lakes, snow-capped mountains, and sacred Tibetan pilgrimage sites.
Xinduqiao: Often called "the paradise of photographers," known for its vast grasslands, scattered Tibetan houses, and golden poplar trees, especially beautiful in autumn.
Tagong Grassland: A vast, picturesque plateau where you can experience Tibetan nomadic life and visit the iconic Tagong Monastery.
Danba: Famous for its unique and ancient Tibetan watchtowers (Diaolou) and beautiful Jiarong Tibetan villages.
Luhuo, Ganzi, Dao fu, Litang: These towns and counties are part of historical Kham Tibet, offering insights into traditional Tibetan life, monasteries, and unique architecture.
Larung Gar Buddhist Academy: The world's largest Tibetan Buddhist institute, famed for its red monastic huts and deep spiritual ambiance. This site is not available for international tourists currently.
