Mt.Kailash Tour

The kora (circumambulation/circuit/parikrama) around Mt Kailash is one of the most important pilgrimages in Asia. Mt Kailash has been a religious sanctuary since pre-Buddhist times. Pilgrims of Hindu, Buddhist, Jain and Bon believe that one kora around Mt Kailash cleans sins of this lifetime; 108 koras breaks the cycle of rebirth and assures one of nirvana at death.

Mt Kailash Kora is 52km long, usually takes 3 days to complete. Altitude ranges from 4675m at Darchen the starting point to 5630m at Drolma-la, the highest point of the kora. The kora is made in a clockwise direction by Hindus and Buddhists but counterclockwise by followers of the Jain and Bön religions.

A trip here wonderfully integrates the spiritual, cultural and physical dimensions of any trip to Tibet. Being able to meet pilgrims from across Tibet and other countries is one of the many alluring factors of this trek.

Frequently asked questions

Is it no problem for elders to visit Mt. Kailash and have a kora trekking tour around it?

Normally, it will be no problem as long as you don’t have any cardiovascular, cerebrovascular or pulmonary diseases. We just had a group tour in this July, a client over 70 years old also went to Mt. Kailash. And he was fine to finish the whole itinerary.

However, I cannot guarantee if it’s okay for you to trek in the Kailash area. We do have some elders did this tour before. But, it varies with different individuals. For a small group tour, there are no yaks to hold your luggage. You need to do it by yourself and trek on the plateau with an elevation of 4,000 meters (13,124 feet). Of course, you could hire a yak or a porter to carry the luggage. Or, ride a horse to finish the trekking.

Please look for some professional advice from your doctor as well in case of any unexpected situation.

The total distance is around 50 kilometers. Usually, three days are enough to finish it. Some strong people could even finish it within two days. But, we arrange three days for our clients as per the ordinary situation. And we have a 15-day Kailash tour, which is following the route: Lhasa – Everest – Kailash – Lhasa.

According to the regulations, travel agencies are not able to arrange Indian Passport Holders to visit Mt. Kailash. We could only provide a Tibet tour except for Ngari Prefecture for you. There is a special organization called "Pilgrim Center" for Indian people to do Kora around Kailash. Please ask for help from them.
