How to Travel to Tibet?

Dubai is 3,219 kilometers from Lhasa. For Dubai travelers, it's convenient to fly to Lhasa, Tibet. Since there is no direct flight between Dubai and Lhasa, passengers have to transfer flights via Kathmandu, Nepal, or major cities in China and then take a flight or a train to Lhasa.

Dubai to Tibet via Kathmandu

Taking flights from Dubai to Kathmandu and then to Tibet is one of the popular ways for travelers as the flight duration is relatively short. Flights usually take 4 hours and 10 minutes to Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport(KTM) from Dubai International Airport (DXB). The price is relatively stable, taking about AED 500. Then you can take a direct flight to Lhasa Gonggar Airport(LXA), which only takes 1.5 hours. But the daily flights have not yet resumed so far, around 3 flights per week, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, starting from 17 April. For other dates, you need to take a connecting flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa via Chengdu. You can check it online easily. Currently, there is no train from Kathmandu to Tibet so you can take a flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa or take an overland tour.

Please note, that you have to stay in Kathmandu for at least three days for your Chinese group visa application and this group visa requires 4 participants to apply together. If there are less than 4 people from you, the group visa will not be issued. So the actual time of flying to Kathmandu takes much longer than flying to mainland China and then to Lhasa, Tibet.

Dubai to Tibet via China Mainland

Taking flights from Dubai to China mainland and then to Lhasa is the fastest way now. Chinese inland cities like  Xián, Kunming, Chengdu, or Guangzhou are recognized as tourist cities with rich historical attractions and local delicacies. So you can stay there for 2 or 3 days for sightseeing. The fastest flight to Lhasa takes about 18 hours. You can fly to Kunming Changshui International Airport (KMG), or Xi'an Xianyang International Airport (XIY), or  Guangzhou Baiyun Airport(CAN), then fly to Lhasa. Alternatively, you also can take a Tibet train from the most major cities to enjoy the amazing scenery of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
