Nepal, a landlocked country lying along the Himalayas is the closest neighborhood of Tibet, China.  And Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal has much in common with Tibet. Both of the two cities are the sacred land of Buddhism. Meanwhile is it much easier to plan a trip to Tibet from Kathmandu, Nepal.

A Trip to Tibet from Kathmandu by air

Of course, you can plan a trip to Tibet by air because there are two direct flights from  Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport to Lhasa Gonggar Airport which are operated by Air China and Sichuan Airline. There is no doubt that there are some connecting flights to Tibet from Kathmandu, Nepal which would stop over at Chongqing, Chengdu, and Kunming and then you can transfer flights to Tibet.

Kathmandu to Lhasa Overland

If you wanna see the beautiful scenery between Kathmandu and Tibet, you are suggested to plan a trip to Tibet by land which is a popular way for tourists. Following the Friendship Highway, an intoxicating scenic route on the Tibetan Plateau, you may see the spectacular nature views including the stunning Yamdrok Lake, fantastic Karola Glaciers, and Pelkor Chode Monastery, etc. Moreover, you are able to catch a glimpse of Mount Everest.

Note: If you plan a trip to Tibet from Kathmandu, there is no need to apply for a China Visa. What you need is a Group Visa.

There are numerous of foreigner tourists plan a trip to Tibet from mainland China which seems to be the most convenient way to get to Tibet. Here are some popular route to Tibet from mainland China.

A trip to Tibet via Chengdu

As the Biggest International Hub in Southwest China, Chengdu is definitely your first choice when planning a trip to Tibet from Chengdu. There are about 34 directs flights to Tibet from Chengdu every day.

Taking a train to Tibet from Chengdu will also follow the Qinghai-Tibet Railway and it will take about 43hours to travel to Tibet from Chengdu by train.

A trip to Tibet via Beijing

Beijing Lhasa train follows the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, the highest railway in China is an adventure tour route of traveling to Tibet. Since it was put in to use in 2006, Tibet Train Tour is becoming more and more popular.  It will take you 41 hours to get to Tibet from Beijing. The 41-hour train trip to Lhasa from Beijing will bring you the beautiful landscape scenery that you have never seen.

You can choose to travel to Tibet from Beijing by air. As the capital city of China, Beijing is an international hub. You can easily take flights from your own country to Beijing and then transfer to Tibet from Beijing.
 

A trip to Tibet vis Shanghai

You can either take flights to Tibet from Shanghai or travel to Tibet from Shanghai by train. Presently, there are three direct flights from Shanghai to Lhasa and it will take about 7 hours to travel from Shanghai to Lhasa. Shanghai-Lhasa train departs at 20:10 from Shanghai Train Station, and arrives at Lhasa Railway Station at 19:44 on the third day. Shanghai to Lhasa train journey would take you 47 hours.
