Daily Itinerary

Collapse

This is the first day in Tibet. Your guide will greet you at Lhasa Gonggar Airport/Railway Station and transfer you to your hotel. It usually takes around 1 hour to drive from Lhasa Airport to downtown Lhasa and takes about 20 minutes from Lhasa Railway Station. Tourists could have a look at the Yarlung Tsangpo River, the largest and longest river in Tibet on their way to the hotel. After check-in, you can have a good rest first. And if you feel like going out, you can wander around the city. But just remember that don't take too much stuff, try to go with a light pack. Meanwhile, drink some more water, and do not move strenuously. It’s really useful to get acclimatized to the high altitude.

Stay overnight in Lhasa

After resting one night, today you will recover sufficiently to launch your Lhasa city tour, with close contact with Lhasa, which is the political, economic, cultural, communication and tourism center of Tibet with a history of over 1300 years.

At first, you will go to the Potala Palace, which is the symbolic place of Lhasa and also the winter palace of the Dalai Lama. It was built by the 33rd great king of Tibet - Songtsen Gangpo in the 7th century. The gilded burial stupas of former Dalai Lamas and the meditation Cave of the 33rd great king are the most worth seeing in Potala Palace.

After lunch, you are going to Jokhang Temple, which was founded at the same time and by the same king as Potala Palace. From the outside, you can see many pilgrims prostrating in front of the temple. The most precious treasure of this temple is the statue of Buddha Sakyamuni at the age of 12.

Barkhor Street is the next destination that women love a lot. Because it’s a famous busy walking street where they can go shopping. There are many distinctive shops and stalls that sell different Tibetan stuff, like handicrafts, Thangka, and so on. Except for shopping, tourists can also join the Kora with pilgrims and locals, to explore Tibetan religious culture more deeply.

Optional:

You can go to visit the Tibetan handicraft art or Tibetan Traditional Medicine center if time is enough. You can also watch the Tibetan Culture Show in the evening for USD60 per person at your own expense.

Stay overnight in Lhasa

In the morning, you are heading to Drepung monastery, which means Monastery of Rice Heaps in the Tibetan language. It's a white magnificent building complex that looks also like piles of rice heaps in the distance. Drepung monastery is the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery, where lived more than 10 thousand monks in the past.

In the afternoon, tourists will pay a visit to Sera Monastery, which is one of the "great three" Gelug monasteries of Tibet. Its most famous Buddhist debate is held around 15:00 to 17:00. If the debate is not your type, you can also enjoy the three sand Mandalas and colorful Rock Paintings of Buddha.

Stay overnight in Lhasa

I am interested in the Tingri to Everest Base Camp Trekking Tour. We are in our 60s but fit with hiking experience. We would like help also with Visas for Tibet and booking the train journey from Chengdu to Lhasa. We do not wish to share the soft sleeper cabin with anyone else and will pay for the extra two berths so that we do not need to share. We are flexible for a date in May.
Please could you tell me what baggage we can bring and if there are porters to carry the bags. I assume we need rucksacks. Do we need to bring sleeping bags and liners? What are the camping facilities like? Are there lodges we could stay instead?

Dear Ali****,

Good morning!

1. This is Jennie at your service. We can also arrange the 12-day Tingri to Everest Base Camp Trekking Tour for you and also can arrange extra days before any tour for you. Please kindly note, the trekking route is moderately difficult and you may have a high risk of altitude sickness. So I suggest you consult with your doctor and stay physically strong and healthy before making the decision to travel to Tibet. The trekking tour is a private tour.

2. If you prefer the group tour, I suggest you consider the 8-day Lhasa to Everest Base Camp Group Tour, and we can also arrange several private days in Lhasa for you before the tour.

I have arranged a one-day Dode Valley trekking for you. If you agree, I can quote you in the next email.  If I fail to get it exactly right the first time around, I'll happily tweak it until your satisfaction.

Asked by Paig***

The Tingri to Everest Base Camp Trekking Tour sounds very amazing! I would be looking to do it in April 2023. What would the price be for one person? I would be interested in the price of 4 star, 3 star and budget guest house accommodations. I am from Canada.

Answered by Beatrice

Dear Paige, Thank you for sending us an inquiry! This is Beatrice at your serivce. If Tibet opens in 2023, we can arrange this tour for you. Since you are traveling alone, the cost of this 12 days tour is relatively higher, especially for a trekking tour in a remote area of Tibet. The tour cost in April is USD5220 for 3-star hotels and USD5407 for 4-star hotels. In Lhasa and Shigatse, only 3 or 4 hotels with special qualifications are allowed to accommodate foreign tourists. During your trekking, only guest houses are available. If you want to lower the cost, we can try to recruit other travelers to join you.
